FAQs

  • Food waste composting is the process of transforming organic waste material, such as leftover food, fruit peels, and vegetable scraps into nutrient-rich compost. This process is environmentally friendly, reducing the amount of waste that goes into landfills and providing valuable nutrients for soil.

  • Our composting service provides customers with a composting bucket or bin where they can sort their food waste and other organic waste. This waste is either dropped off at one of our convenient community drop-off locations or collected curbside by us, depending on your chosen subscription.

Our team collects the waste and transports it to our composting farm, where it’s transformed into nutrient-rich compost. Customers then receive complimentary compost back upon request.

In short: you’re composting, but we’re doing the dirty work!

  • Our Residential Community Drop-off service provides a network of drop-off bins across Loudoun and Fairfax counties where customers may easily dispose of their food scraps and other organic waste for composting. These locations are open 24/7 for your convenience. See a map of all our locations here.

Upon sign-up, you will receive a food-grade, leak-proof composting bucket to sort your food scraps with. You may empty your scraps at any drop-off location of your choosing, at any time, and the Worm Works team later transports the bins to our composting farm for processing.

  • The short answer: you can generally compost anything organic (originating from the earth or an animal). However, there are exceptions and items to look out for. Please see our Composting Guide for a comprehensive list of the items we accept for composting.

  • You should avoid composting materials like raw meat, oils, grease, and animal feces. Additionally, synthetic materials, plastic, glass, metal, and treated wood should not be composted.

Please see our Composting Guide for a comprehensive list of the items we do not accept for composting.

  • Store your food waste in the compost bin we provide. It's best to keep the bin in a cool, dry place and ensure it's tightly sealed to prevent odors and pests. We recommend wrapping particularly smelly items in newspaper before placing them in the bin.

  • Our Residential Community Drop-off bins are replaced with fresh bins twice weekly by our Worm Van drivers, who then transport the full bins to our composting farm. This does not affect when customers may drop off their food scraps, as our bins are available “on demand”, 24/7.

Please note: The composting buckets customers receive upon subscription are meant for sorting and transporting food waste to drop-off sites, and their collection/maintenance is not included in our service.

  • After we collect your compost bin, we transport it to our composting facility where the waste is transformed into nutrient-rich compost. This compost is then made available to local farmers, gardeners, and landscaping companies.

  • Yes, we offer our customers the opportunity to receive some of the compost generated from their food waste. Please let us know if you're interested in this option.

  • Composting food waste reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, where it would release harmful methane gas as it decomposes. Instead, the organic material is transformed into nutrient-rich compost, contributing to soil health and productivity.
